UN urges impartial probe into demise of ex-Venezuelan minister

Venezuela’s authorities says Raul Baduel, who served as defence minister underneath Hugo Chavez, died as a result of coronavirus.

The United Nations human rights workplace urged Venezuela to conduct an “independent investigation” into the demise of jailed former minister Raul Baduel, a distinguished dissident who was thought-about a political prisoner by the nation’s opposition.

Baduel was arrested in 2009 on corruption fees after falling out with the Socialist Party, finally positioned on home arrest after which re-jailed in 2017 for allegedly conspiring towards Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

A retired common, he served as Venezuela’s defence minister underneath ex-President Hugo Chavez. But the connection between the pair later fell aside after Baduel argued towards a constitutional reform proposed by Chavez.

Two of Baduel’s sons even have been arrested over alleged conspiracy.
