
The list has been released regarding which are the most indebted countries in the world in 2025.
The list of debtor countries is compiled by looking at a country’s total gross national debt and debt-to-GDP ratio.
Additionally, the debt of countries is viewed as public and in some cases gross government debt, or a combination of both. This is why the list may vary from institution to institution.
Japan :
Japan appears to be leading the way with the highest debt ratio in 2025, with debt to 242 percent.
Singapore:
Singapore’s public debt will be 173 percent of gross GDP in 2025.
Eritrea:
Eritrea’s public debt ratio will be 210 percent of gross GDP in 2025.
Greece:
Greece’s debt will be 149 percent of total GDP in 2025.
Italy:
Italy’s public debt is expected to be 138 percent of GDP this year.
Sudan:
Sudan’s debt will be 128 percent of GDP this year.
Bahrain:
The list also includes the Arab nation of Bahrain, whose public debt ratio has nearly tripled to 131 percent of GDP in 2025.
Maldives:
On the other hand, the government debt of the Maldives will remain at 125 percent of GDP.
USA:
The debt burden on America is increasing rapidly in the current century. This year it is expected to be 124 percent of GDP.
France:
This year, France’s public debt will be 116 percent of GDP, while experts say it could reach 120 percent by the end of the decade.
