An assistant jailer at the Madurai Central Jail in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu has been suspended after inappropriate behavior with an inmate’s granddaughter.
According to Indian media, Madurai’s assistant jailer was suspended for asking the inmate’s granddaughter to come home alone and a case of inappropriate behavior was registered.
According to the report, Assistant Jailor Balagur Swamy was familiar with the girl as she used to visit her relative in the jail, taking advantage of his acquaintance, the jailer allegedly asked her to come alone to his house.
The incident of mistreatment by the jailer came to light after the girl lodged a police complaint, leading to Balagurswamy’s suspension and legal action. After the girl’s complaint, other members of her family surrounded her in a public place and assaulted her, after which she was taken to the police station.
After investigation, it was learned that this was not the first incident, but that Balagurswamy had been misbehaving with female relatives of various inmates in the past as well, against whom complaints had been made.
