A few months after Sheikh Hasina left the country, Bangladesh is going to take a big decision. The interim government of Mohammad Yunus is going to remove the picture of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, father of Sheikh Hasina and one of the founding figures of the country, from its currency notes. The Central Bank says that bank notes of 20, 100, 500 and 1000 taka are being printed by them.
Bangladesh Bank has started printing new notes bearing the features of the July revolt, which was part of anti-reservation protests by students against the Sheikh Hasina-led government, Dhaka Tribune reported. As per the instructions of the Mohammad Yunus-led interim government, the central bank said that bank notes of 20, 100, 500 and 1000 taka are being printed.
First picture removed from Mohammad Yunus’ office
This announcement comes just a few weeks after a media report said that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s photo has been removed from Mohammad Yunus’ office. The Dhaka Tribune stated, "The new notes will not have the picture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman." The central bank further said that religious structures, Bengali traditions and graffiti created during the July protests will be included in the new notes.
The printing process has advanced considerably
Bangladesh Bank spokesperson and executive director Husnera Shikha said, “The printing process has progressed significantly. I hope that new notes can be released in the market within the next six months. Central Bank and Finance Ministry officials reportedly said that initially only the designs of four notes are being changed. All types of bank notes will be redesigned in phases without Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s photograph.
The Financial Institutions Division, a department of the Finance Ministry, had submitted a detailed design proposal for the new note to Bangladesh Bank on September 29. However, the main recommendation for printing of new notes will be made by the Currency and Design Advisory Committee of the central bank.
